Keeping That Summertime Glow

For all of us makeup lovers, spring/summer is both a blessing and a disaster, because wearing makeup can be such a hassle in the heat. However, I have some tips and tricks to share with you to maximize your makeup wear!

TIP 1: Use an SPF as a base

I always start my makeup with a freshly washed face, then I prep my face with an SPF. Because sunscreens tend to be thicker and oiler than a regular moisturizer, I usually let the product sit on my face for 10 minutes before I actually start applying makeup.

TIP 2: Use a Primer

Now that my skin is prepped, I apply a primer. This is key to having a long-wear makeup. Here I use the Milk Makeup Blur Stick to prime my face. I really like this primer because it is very easy to carry around. The stick is soft on the skin and creates a smooth base for the foundation. My pores are blurred out and my skin has a satin/matte finish after using it.

TIP 3: Apply powder before any liquids

This trick is one that I always use if I will be wearing makeup for more than 6 hours. I use a damped sponge and apply powder on top of my primer. Instead of letting the power sit on top of my face, I use a pressing motion to make sure that the powder soaks up the excess product on my face and locks in the primer. I always use my go-to Laura Mercier Translucent Powder for this process. This really helps making my makeup last through the heat.

TIP 4: More Powder

After my foundation is on (I use the Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear), I bake my face with the same Laura Mercier Translucent Powder. Instead of putting powder underneath my eye to “bake”, I put powder all over my face. This takes away the shine of the makeup, so I don’t end up looking greasy in the heat. To make sure that my makeup is not cakey with all that powder, I make sure to press it in my skin using a sponge and wipe the excess using a fluffy brush (like the Lancôme powder brush in the picture). I leave the powder to bake on my face for no more than 5 minutes to make sure that it does not give a white cast. The last thing I want is to look ashy under the sun!

TIP 5: Spray, Spray, Spray!

A setting spray is a must! To make sure that my makeup lasts all day, I spray my face after ever layer of makeup (foundation, concealer, powder, eyeshadow). I typically use the Too Faced Hangover setting spray and spray a generous amount. I wait for the setting spray to dry, and then apply powder (again) to set my makeup. This process goes on and on until I am done with my full face.

I am currently travelling in Bali, Indonesia, and I’ve definitely used all of the tips listed below to make my makeup stay on all day. I even swam with my makeup and 85% of it was still on my face but sadly, my eyeliner and eyeshadow was left in the pool. However, my foundation was practically flawless!

Always keep in mind that there are no “right” ways to apply makeup - do what works for you! These are just some methods that I found helpful. Hopefully these tips will make your makeup last all day and night! My perfect makeup look is sun-kissed with a natural glow ;)
